When to Use This Checklist

In my role coordinating emergency equipment readiness for a Level 2 trauma center, I've learned a simple truth: 5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction. This checklist is for ER leads, charge nurses, and biomed techs who'd rather find a problem in a quiet zone than in the middle of a code.

It takes about 20 minutes per zone. Done right, it's the difference between a boring shift and a bad one.

The 5-Step Critical Equipment Checklist

Step 1: Run the BiPAP self-test. Every time.

BiPAP machines earn their keep at 3 AM when a COPD patient arrives in respiratory distress. A machine that worked yesterday can fail today — internal sensors drift, filters clog, firmware glitches.

Start with the basics: power cord seated, filters clean, no cracks in the tubing. Then run the internal self-test. Most machines have one. It takes 90 seconds. Skipping it is how you end up with a BiPAP machine that alarms through your worst shift. Period.

The error I see most? The wrong Exhale Port for the mask type. It looks right. It's not. And now the patient is fighting the machine because the pressure curve is off.

Step 2: Confirm ICD device interrogation reports are current.

An ICD device — implantable cardioverter-defibrillator — isn't something you manage in the ED every day. But when a patient with one arrives dizzy or post-shock, you have minutes, not hours. Your only reliable source of truth is the last interrogation report from the device clinic.

Is it in the chart? Is it from the last 6 months? What was the battery status? Did it record any therapies?

And does the crash cart have a magnet? (note to self: verify ours is still there — it's been a while.)

Step 3: Treat CGM readings as trends, not lab results.

Continuous glucose monitors are increasingly common. But how does a CGM work, exactly? A tiny sensor under the skin measures glucose in interstitial fluid every few minutes and transmits the data to a receiver or phone app. That trend line is valuable — it can show you where the patient's glucose is heading before the values become critical.

In the ED: check the reader's sensor code matches the box. Plus, verify no calibration is due. And remember: when the patient is critical, a CGM is not a replacement for a blood glucose test. It's an early warning system, not a final answer.

Step 4: Verify GE Healthcare AI software is current.

AI-assisted reading is only as good as the version you're running. In March 2024, one of our radiologists saw an AI tool flag a subtle pneumothorax on a portable chest X-ray. It was real. But we discovered the system was two versions behind — the release notes said the newer version was specifically built to detect that subtlety.

Check your GE Healthcare AI software version against the release notes. Monthly. Assign a named person if you can.

I don't have hard data on how many EDs are running outdated versions, but based on what I see at conferences and in our own region, my sense is it's at least a third.

Step 5: Know your service plan and the nearest hub.

Every downtime event is a test of how prepared you are. If your GE Healthcare system goes down on Friday night, do you know who to call? What's the escalation path?

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming "checked yesterday" means "works today." It doesn't. Batteries drain. Firmware updates fail silently.
  • Trusting the green indicator light. It tells you the machine is on. Run the self-test anyway.
  • Forgetting the rarely used devices. The transport ventilator that hasn't been moved since last fall is the one that will fail during a stat transfer.
